Neurotoxins
Neurotoxins, or also known as “Botox”, are commonly used in areas of facial expression – crow’s feet, furrows between our browns and forehead lines. Neurotoxins work by inhibiting the contraction of your muscle in and around those “problem areas.”
Neurotoxins are great for not only smoothing and diminishing lines but also for preventing the increased intensity of those lines as we age.
What’s the difference?
People use the term “Botox” interchangeably for products like Dysport and Xeomin. All three are effective treatments that originate from the same source bacterium, clostridium botulinum. They are synthesized as botulinum toxin type A, the paralyzing agent or neurotoxin that is administered. Each has been consistently proven in clinical trials and then worldwide application. The result is almost always the same: each injectable temporarily paralyzes the targeted muscle areas on the face to relax and ease out the appearance of wrinkles.

Essentials to Know
- Botox is the brand name of an injectable product produced by Allergan Inc. It’s the first and most popular neuromodulator
- Botox takes seven to ten days to see results
- Botox may be the best option to concentrate on deeper wrinkling
- Dysport contains lactose and cow’s milk protein and muscular blocking agents to improve its effectiveness.
- Noted benefits of Dysport include that it spreads more than Botox and patients who have stopped responding to Botox commonly use it.
- Dysport has a quicker onset time, typically taking two to three days to see results, but a shorter lifespan
- Xeomin contains no accessory protein, making it a “pure” version of the botulinum toxin and reducing the risk of an allergic reaction or natural resistance.
- Fewer units may be needed to achieve the desired result

What to expect from toxin treatments?
The depth, length, quantity and location of wrinkles varies for each patient. Therefore, the injection treatment, including the dosage and injection location, is tailored during the procedure. There is no downtime after a Botox/ Xeomin/ Dysport injection. Some mild swelling and redness may occur at the injection sites, but the skin will return to a normal appearance a few hours after treatment. Patients are able to resume their normal activities during the same day as their treatment. Toxins take about 2 days to start seeing results, patients will notice an inability to fully move portions of their forehead. With limited movement, wrinkles will cease to appear, resulting in skin that appears smooth and soft.
Initially, the physician may want to see the patient 2 weeks after for a brief “touch-up” and checkup of the procedure. Neurotoxins are not a permanent fix. Results will last for several months – sometimes longer–but they will not last forever. The longevity depends on everything from the way a patient’s body metabolizes the product to the area being treated. Patients are usually ready for a follow-up visit within 3-4 months after treatment. This varies by patient.
